Practice Guides

"To be a professional musician is to be a professional practicer." - Alberto Almarza

In other words, you must enjoy the process of preparation or you won't succeed in performance, and more importantly, you won't enjoy your tenure as a musician. Yet how many of us have looked at a piece of music, new or old, and thought, "I'm not even sure where to start!" My personal philosophy is that anything can be made easy. That's why I've created these comprehensive practice guides - to provide creative and thoughtful solutions to one of the most major obstacles to learning music: the how. Each guide uses musical excerpts as a template for learning warmups and practice techniques that can be applied to all repertoire. I hope these guides will serve flutists at all stages of musical development.

A Midsummer Night's Dream

Felix Mendelssohn's Midsummer Night's Dream is well known among flutists for its spritely scherzo. Light, relaxed fingers and steady airflow will help you bring out the sparkle in this fantastical solo.
